Extreme Makeover: GAO.gov Edition

Posted on February 13, 2020

Today we launched a new website and we’re pretty excited about it.

We hope the new website will help us better communicate and share the results of our work with you and help you get easier access to information about issues you care about. What’s different? Check out our video featuring Comptroller General Gene Dodaro, and read on to find out.

Welcome to GAO.gov

Description

U.S. Comptroller General Gene Dodaro welcomes visitors to GAO’s newly redesigned official website.

All the same non-partisan, fact-based reports and other information you’ve come to expect from us is here but with new features that meet user needs in the information age. We’ve got:

  • Mobile-friendliness that allows you to better access the website from your phone or tablet
  • Redesigned look and feel to modernize our site and make it easier to navigate
  • Improved search tools to get you the information you want faster
  • Integrated WatchBlog to help you more easily find blog posts related to reports and topics, and vice versa
  • New tools to help connect you to our experts
  • Enhanced database to more easily display key information on different parts of the site

But what isn’t new is the work. We’re still examining how the government spends money and how federal programs and policies operate, making recommendations for improvement—and saving taxpayers billions of dollars in the process.

Since we launched the first version of GAO.gov in 1996, we’ve strived to provide a modern and user-focused portal to our work.

We’ve made some great strides since our first site! We’ve redesigned it a few times over the years, and the last time was in 2011. We knew it was time for a change, so last year we started working with people inside and outside of GAO to come up with a new design to make it easier for you, our users, to access our work. The result of that effort is the new site which launched today.

So take a look around and make yourself at home. We’re happy to have you here.

About Watchblog

GAO's mission is to provide Congress with fact-based, nonpartisan information that can help improve federal government performance and ensure accountability for the benefit of the American people. GAO launched its WatchBlog in January, 2014, as part of its continuing effort to reach its audiences—Congress and the American people—where they are currently looking for information.

The blog format allows GAO to provide a little more context about its work than it can offer on its other social media platforms. Posts will tie GAO work to current events and the news; show how GAO’s work is affecting agencies or legislation; highlight reports, testimonies, and issue areas where GAO does work; and provide information about GAO itself, among other things.

Please send any feedback on GAO's WatchBlog to blog@gao.gov.
